Shiite Muslims Gain Seats in Boycotted Kuwait Election
Shiite Muslims in Kuwait have gained one-third of the parliament in early polls boycotted by majority Sunni candidates. The Shiites who make up 3o% of the population in Kuwait won 17 seats in the election held on Saturday. The opposition did not gain any representative in the 50- eat parliament after it opted to boycott Saturday's polls to protest there government's unilateral amending of Kuwait's key electoral law. Under the previous law, a voter was able to choose a maximum of four candidates, lowered to just one in the new system. They also vowed Sunday to continue protests until the new parliament is abolished.
Response: I think this is going to cause lots of conflict in Kuwait. Whenever a religion or political group has a large number of seats in a government, it causes unrest because other religions or political groups have less power than they do. I also believe that this is going to cause internal conflict in the government. Other members of parliament are going to feel outnumbered and like they have no say in choices made by parliament because they are the minority.
